QCT 4 – To Be Confident, First Act Confident
A well-known film producer was looking for someone to play a skilful burglar in his new movie.
For almost a year, he waited outside a prison. Speaking to every released prisoner, until he found someone with the right experience.
Act first, if you want to be confident
Clearly the event above never happened. Because someone who acts a certain way can be as convincing as someone who has the actual experience.
Do you think that actors are really like the characters they’re playing? Of course not.
If you want to be confident, act as if you’re already confident and your mind will start to believe the act, and help you to get there for real.
If you don’t feel like you can even act confidently, then maybe you could spend some time each day imagining yourself in situations where you act confidently.
Your mind can’t tell the difference between something that is experienced and something that is vividly imagined. So, to be confident, first act that way.
From today, commit to behaving more confidently, even if it feels like an act. Pretend you’re confident, even if you’re not.
For example,
- relax your breath, stand up straight, look people in the eye and speak with a clear, unwavering tone: you’ll immediately feel more confident.
- make some simple decisions like, picking a new restaurant, or going to see a show.
- Give compliments to other people.
- etc.
Give it a try and write down how it went in your notebook.
